Marine Insulator in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area shipyards. The Marine Insulator must possess knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to insulate surfaces of pipe, ducts, valves, fittings, flanges, boilers, tanks, turbines, evaporators, refrigerating units, bulkheads and similar structures in connection with ship alteration and repair. This position requires full time hours with great overtime potential for the skilled trade candidate to utilize their skills fully working with a knowledgeable crew.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate must have 5+ years of experience as a Marine Insulator with knowledge of NAVSEA Standards common in Shipyard jobs
- Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence with skilled trade terms
- Must have a solid understanding of ship repair terminology and ship compartment location names used in the maritime industry
- Must be physically and medically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job as prescribed under OSHA standards
- Must have experience using hand and power tools associated with the trade in a safe manner
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals using US customary measurement system
- Must possess a basic understanding of the metric system
- Five (5) years of related experience, three (3) of which must be in the maritime environment
- Appropriate PPE must always be worn per Maritime regulations
- Lift/push/pull 50 lbs. to 100 lbs. on an occasional basis (0-33% of the day)
- Lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs. on a frequent basis (34-66% of the day)
- Work at heights above 12 from ladders, scaffolding, and lifts
- Fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down
Responsibilities
- Remove, repair, and install insulation on piping systems, ventilation systems, and various components and structures including Bulkheads
- Remove, manufacture and install portable insulation pads using pipe insulation and duct insulation techniques common to these skilled trades projects
- Select amount and type of insulation to be installed as well as method of securing (e.g. wiring, pasting, strapping, taping) according to shape of surface
