We’re hiring experienced Marine Spray Painters for shipyard and marine industrial projects throughout Hampton Roads. This position is responsible for preparing and coating interior and exterior vessel surfaces to protect them from rust, corrosion, weather exposure, and marine growth.

Marine Spray Painters work with steel, wood, fiberglass, and other surfaces. Because each surface requires the correct treatment, successful candidates must understand surface preparation, coating selection, mixing procedures, and application techniques.

Job Responsibilities

Depending on the assignment, daily duties may include surface preparation, coating application, equipment maintenance, and final quality inspections.

• • Before applying coatings, prepare surfaces by sanding, cleaning, grinding, or blasting
  • Remove rust, scale, dirt, grease, and existing coatings
  • Mix, tint, and prepare paints and protective coatings
  • Then apply primers, finish coats, and specialized marine coatings
  • Operate spray guns, rollers, brushes, and related equipment
  • Perform spray painting in interior and exterior work areas
  • In addition, protect nearby surfaces from overspray and coating damage
  • After application, inspect completed work for proper coverage and finish quality
  • Follow coating specifications, work instructions, and safety procedures
  • Estimate the type and quantity of coating needed for assigned work
  • After application clean and maintain painting tools, spray equipment, and work areas
  • Properly use respirators and other required protective equipment
  • Work safely around other trades, equipment, and vessel operations

In addition, some projects may also require stencil work, lettering, wood finishing, graining, marbling, flocking, or the application of gold and aluminum leaf.

Qualifications

Because marine painting takes place in an active industrial environment, candidates must be safety-conscious, dependable, and prepared to use the required protective equipment.

• • Previous marine, shipyard, industrial, or commercial painting experience
  • In addition, experience using spray guns and other painting equipment
  • Specifically, basic knowledge of surface preparation and coating application
  • Ability to recognize and use job-related tools safely
  • Because safety is essential, an understanding of respiratory protection and required PPE
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • When required, willingness to work in confined spaces and at varying heights
  • The ability to maintain reliable attendance and arrive on time
  • Additionally flexibility regarding schedules and project needs
